Pepper Spray Certification

A TX DPS Training Course Offered by Shepherds Tactical

The Texas Security Officer Pepper Spray (OC) Certification Course is a training program designed for security professionals seeking authorization to carry and use Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) pepper spray while performing security duties in the State of Texas. This course follows training standards recognized through the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and provides students with the legal knowledge and practical skills required to responsibly carry this defensive tool while on duty.

This course includes both classroom instruction and hands-on practical training.

The course begins with a structured lecture and instructional portion led by a certified instructor. During this segment, students will review the legal authority and limitations associated with carrying and deploying pepper spray while working in the private security industry. Instruction includes discussion of relevant Texas laws, use-of-force guidelines, liability considerations, proper documentation and reporting, and professional conduct when using defensive tools in a security environment.

Students will also learn about situational awareness, threat recognition, and decision-making when determining whether the use of pepper spray is appropriate. The course emphasizes the importance of understanding force escalation and de-escalation, ensuring students recognize when the use of OC spray may be justified and when alternative responses are more appropriate.

Visual slides, instructor discussion, and written training materials are used throughout the classroom portion to ensure students clearly understand the legal and professional responsibilities associated with carrying OC spray.

All students are required to complete and pass a written exam following the classroom instruction. This exam verifies that students understand the laws, safety considerations, and responsibilities related to pepper spray use in a security role.

After successfully completing the written portion, students will participate in a hands-on practical training segment. During this portion of the course, students will learn the proper handling and deployment of pepper spray, including safe carry methods, drawing techniques, spray patterns, target areas, distance management, and post-deployment procedures.

Students will also be trained on decontamination procedures, medical considerations, and how to assist individuals who have been exposed to OC spray, including proper safety protocols for themselves and others in the area.

A skills-based assessment is conducted at the end of the practical portion to confirm that students can safely demonstrate the techniques and safety procedures taught during the course.

Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive the documentation required to submit their pepper spray proficiency certification through the Texas Department of Public Safety, allowing them to legally carry OC spray while performing security duties for a licensed security company in Texas.

The Pepper Spray Certification Course generally lasts 3 to 4 hours and is $50 per person.

This course is designed to provide clear, professional, and practical instruction, ensuring students understand the legal responsibilities and safe deployment techniques required to carry and use pepper spray while working in the private security field.
