Level III Commission Security License
A TX DPS Training Course Offered by Shepherds Tactical
The Texas Level III Commissioned Security Officer Certification Course is a state-required training program designed for individuals seeking to work as commissioned (armed) security officers in the State of Texas. This course provides the advanced knowledge, legal instruction, and firearm proficiency required for security professionals who will carry a handgun while performing security duties.
This course includes both classroom instruction and live-fire firearms training.
The course begins with a structured lecture and instructional portion led by a certified instructor. During this segment, students will review the expanded legal authority and responsibilities of commissioned security officers in Texas. Instruction includes discussion of the Texas Private Security Act, relevant Texas Penal Code sections, use-of-force laws, escalation and de-escalation concepts, liability considerations, ethics, and professional conduct while armed on duty. Students will also study situational awareness, conflict management, and proper decision-making when responding to incidents while working in an armed capacity.
Visual slides, instructor-led discussion, and written training materials are used throughout the classroom portion to ensure students clearly understand both the legal responsibilities and serious accountability associated with carrying a firearm while working security.
All students are required to complete and pass a written examination following the classroom instruction. This exam verifies that students understand the laws, responsibilities, and standards expected of commissioned security officers in Texas.
After successfully completing the classroom and written testing portion, students will move to the firearms training and qualification segment of the course. This portion includes instruction on safe handgun handling, firearm fundamentals, range safety procedures, proper loading and unloading techniques, and marksmanship principles. Students will then complete the state-required live-fire qualification course under direct instructor supervision.
The live-fire portion ensures students demonstrate safe firearm handling and the ability to meet the minimum qualification standards required by the State of Texas for commissioned security officers.
Upon successful completion of the classroom training, written exam, and firearms qualification, students will receive the documentation necessary to submit their Texas Level III Commissioned Security Officer License application through the state licensing system. This certification allows individuals to legally work as an armed security officer for a licensed security company in Texas.
This course has a 40 hour minimum requirement and is $350 per person.
The Texas Level III Commissioned Security Course is designed to provide clear, professional, and practical instruction, preparing students to safely and responsibly perform the duties of an armed security professional while meeting all training requirements established by the State of Texas.
