NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO)
A TX NRA Training Course Offered by Shepherds Tactical
The Range Safety Officer (RSO) Certification Course is an 8-hour training program designed for individuals who want to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to safely supervise shooting range activities. This course prepares students to understand and enforce range safety procedures while assisting with the safe operation of both private and public shooting environments.
This course is ideal for firearm instructors, security professionals, shooting range staff, and responsible firearm owners who want to take an active role in maintaining safe shooting conditions for others.
The course begins with a structured classroom lecture and instructional portion led by a certified instructor. During this segment, students will learn the core responsibilities and expectations of a Range Safety Officer. Instruction includes topics such as range safety rules, firearm safety fundamentals, safe firearm handling procedures, range commands, and the responsibilities involved in supervising shooters on a firing line.
Students will also study range operations and standard safety protocols, including proper procedures for starting and stopping range activity, managing shooters on the line, maintaining safe firearm conditions, and identifying unsafe behavior before it becomes a hazard.
Visual slides, instructor-led discussion, and written training materials are used throughout the course to ensure students clearly understand the safety standards and operational procedures associated with range supervision.
Additional instruction focuses on emergency procedures, incident management, and communication skills necessary for maintaining control of a range environment. Students will learn how to safely respond to situations such as firearm malfunctions, unsafe handling, medical emergencies, or violations of range rules.
All students are required to complete and pass a written examination following the classroom instruction. This exam verifies that students understand range safety procedures, responsibilities, and best practices for maintaining a controlled and professional shooting environment.
Following the classroom portion, students will participate in practical scenario-based discussions and exercises designed to reinforce proper range management techniques. These exercises help students practice giving clear range commands, identifying unsafe conditions, and maintaining situational awareness while supervising shooters.
Upon successful completion of the course and written exam, students will receive a Range Safety Officer Certification, verifying they have completed formal training in range supervision and firearm safety management.
The Range Safety Officer Certification Course lasts approximately 8 hours and is $150 per person.
This course is designed to provide clear, professional, and practical instruction, preparing students to confidently enforce range safety standards and promote responsible firearm handling in a controlled shooting environment.
