Texas Department of Criminal Justice Firing Course

A Shepherds Tactical Training Course

Our TDCJ Firing Prerequisite Overview Course is designed for current or aspiring Texas Department of Criminal Justice officers who wish to review or refresh the firing portion of their training. With our instructor’s background as a former TDCJ training officer, this course provides a high-level overview to help students build confidence and familiarity before completing the official firing portion of their preservice or in-service training.

It is important to note that this course only covers the firing portion and does not include the classroom portion of TDCJ training. The material may not be identical to the official TDCJ firing program, and completion of this course does not qualify students or substitute for TDCJ certification. This course is intended solely as a supplemental review to help students succeed during their required preservice or in-service firing exercises.

This course is not a safety training course. All students must demonstrate foundational knowledge of firearms before participating. Students may meet this prerequisite by completing our Beginner and Intermediate Firearms Safety courses, or by passing a verification exam confirming their basic firearm knowledge and handling skills.

Instruction begins with classroom discussion and review of key concepts, followed by practical exercises using our dry-fire laser system to simulate range scenarios and build technique and confidence. Students then progress to live-fire practice, which is scored on a pass or fail basis similar to the TDCJ method. We reiterate that this pass/fail evaluation is for instructional purposes only and does not impact official TDCJ certification or course completion.

Classes typically last 2-4 hours, depending on the needs of the student and the complexity of the class. Instruction is tailored to individual skill levels, ensuring each student receives focused guidance and practical feedback.

The course fee starts at $100 per person, with the final cost determined by student needs and class complexity. Discounts are available for multiple students sharing the same session.

This course is ideal for officers preparing for preservice firing, or individuals seeking a refresher before in-service training.
